City of Possibilities was an interactive installation for the Singapore Tourism Board, designed to showcase the country at global trade shows and consumer events. The brief called for something immersive — but not isolating. STB wanted the depth and engagement of a VR experience while keeping it physical, present and social. No headsets, no closing people off from the room. The result was a detailed physical model featuring eight iconic Marina Bay and Sentosa landmarks — Gardens By The Bay, Marina Bay Sands, National Gallery, Siloso Beach, Merlion Park, Esplanade, Resorts World Sentosa, and Raffles Hotel — that doubled as a console for immersive virtual tours.
Two physical avatars could be placed on hotspot pads across the model, initiating 360-degree video tours on a large screen. Rotating the avatars changed the viewing angle, and placing both simultaneously activated a split-screen for two users. The experience was enhanced with ambisonic spatial audio through headphones, and leveraged RFID and 3D printing to bring Singapore to life. It delivered all the richness of an immersive experience while keeping people face-to-face and present in the space.
Visitors could explore the city through seven “passion tribes” — from walking through the Cloud Forest to riding at Adventure Cove Waterpark or going behind the Long Bar at the new Raffles Hotel.
The concept was created by TBWA\Singapore with production partner AIRBAG Productions. First launched at ITB Berlin in 2019, the installation toured global trade shows including Frankfurt, Las Vegas and Barcelona. I worked on this activation as part of the EXP team, building the content management system and travelling with the installation around the world to handle technical operations — deploying, troubleshooting and monitoring the system.
